Mark Coure, the former NSW minister for multiculturalism, was accused of making an allegedly racist joke towards a Labor MP in question time on Wednesday.

The former NSW minister for multiculturalism has apologised for an allegedly racist comment he made towards a newly elected Labor MP in parliament.

Oatley MP and opposition multiculturalism spokesperson Mark Coure apologised twice to Cabramatta MP Tri Vo after Minister for Women Jodie Harrison interrupted question time to demand he withdraw his comments.Harrison told this masthead she heard Coure say: “I thought that bloke [Vo] worked in catering.”

In a statement, Vo said the comments were “in poor taste” but would not deter him from advocating for his community. NSW Treasurer Daniel Mookhey said Coure’s joke was offensive, but not the first time hurtful and racist comments had been made in parliament. Premier Chris Minns has made a point of highlighting the diversity of the new parliament and his cabinet.
