The nation's longest serving foreign minister has accused the progressive left of abandoning the core Australian value of egalitarianism and attempting to shift society towards a “new era of discrimination”.
“In Australia, egalitarianism has been a core value. We have not always lived up to that value throughout our history but despite our failings, we have held egalitarianism dear,” Mr Downer said.
He claimed it revealed a lot about the proponents of the Voice that they seemingly think one group of Australians are likely to have a set of opinions distinct from the rest of Australia because of the colour of their skin. A central element of this problem is the issue of home ownership, which Mr Downer warned was “now beyond the means of many younger people”.“It needs to be a front and centre preoccupation for centre-right political parties, for whom home ownership has been a central part of their vision for a property owning democracy in which all people have a part.”While noting it had some benefits, Mr Downer argued that social media is damaging our ability to tackle the complex challenges our society faces.
