Former Melbourne Demons star Shaun Smith wants to see parents educated about the impact of concussions on young athletes so there is no pressure to get back in the game after a head knock.
The 54-year-old – who received a landmark $1.4 million payout from the AFL in 2020 for concussion symptoms post career – believes parents and junior clubs need to set the standard for concussion protocols.
“There are parents who are very pushy and the kids and parents have to learn that if you do happen to get a concussion you’ve got to sit the game out for an extended period. An issue he highlighted was players wanting to get back onto the field without showing any major symptoms after a concussion. Smith has son, Joel, currently playing for the Demons and was filthy with the AFL’s decision to allow Collingwood’s Brayden Maynard to play after knocking out Joel’s teammate, Angus Brayshaw.
