In the short time since its release, ChatGPT has been harnessed by cybercriminals to help them get into corporate networks, and move around once they’re inside.
Hackers are using ChatGPT to create phishing emails so realistic even staff carefully trained on company security are falling for them, a top cybersecurity expert has warned.
ChatGPT is helping cybercriminals pass themselves off as co-workers, says Chad Skipper, global security technologist at VMware. He said this was a new battle between hackers and the cybersecurity industry that “is going to go on forever”.. It is estimated that around 90 per cent of cyber breaches begin with a successful phishing attack, likely including last year’s Medibank breach that happened after“Cybercriminals will ask ChatGPT, as an example, to craft a message that is in a Southern Texas dialect and the message will say, ‘Howdy y’all! We had a banner year this year and I’m giving bonuses to the entire company! Click here to figure out what your bonus is’,” Mr Skipper said.
