He catches nothing ‘almost always’, but James Graham says that if you try, and keep on trying, the fish will be there somewhere.

ames Graham is the chief executive and managing director of Recce Pharmaceuticals. He lives in Sydney.I would have been around four, standing tall on my late father’s gumboots fishing for chopper tailor one hot summer evening around Point Resolution, near our home in Dalkeith, Western Australia. That feeling of “no luck – give up” to “absolutely on!” when hooking one has never quite left me.

I have been lucky enough to catch all the expected sea monsters along the way, but only a couple of weeks ago I caught a flathead of nearly 80 cm on a weekend in southern NSW, and a 44 cm bream moments later.Daily in my thoughts, but maybe every couple of weeks or so in practice. I’ve recently made a committed effort to try to get away on the weekends, working remotely a day or two a week to be sure to get in at least one day’s fishing.

James Graham enjoys fishing for squid, going cast for cast with his 98-year-old grandfather Deryck Graham. If I’m feeling like a little adventure, I’ll hook the boat up and go for a big drive into the countryside to a fishing oasis near a remote airport where I can leave the car and boat when I fly back and forth to Sydney with my girlfriend and ultimate deckhand, Katrina.Daiwa’s mid-range spinning gear has served me well, running three Daiwa Freams 2000S with Samaki Zing II rods.
