Helping to fight fires this sping, Kaley Dick could spot houses at risk of burning to the ground.
Helping to fight fires in Grande Prairie this spring, Kaley Dick could spot “as plain as day” the difference between houses where residents had, intentionally or not, reduced the risk their home would burn to the ground.inspections for Vulcan County, took time in May from his job as a welder and machinist to help with forest fires in Edson and Grande Prairie.
“The only thing that burned on that property was the little debris pile they had — and that debris pile looked like it had been full of construction debris — and it was maybe 10 metres inside of that green area,” Dick said in an interview with Postmedia. “It was an ember trap, it lit up, but the house survived.”Thanks for signing up!The next issue of Calgary Sun Headline News will soon be in your inbox.“There were trees all the way around, pretty close to the side of it,” Dick said.
“Community members, community leaders, industry and all levels of government have a responsibility to lessen the effects of wildfire,” the website reads.“It’s tough in years like this,” said Dick, who recommends keeping lawn grass green and short during the summer to keep it less flammable. While in Grande Prairie, firefighters put up sprinkler systems and went through a quick FireSmart assessment of properties that hadn’t been affected by fire, said Dick.
“The deployment stories seem to really drive it home for people,” he said, who lives on a rural property near Vulcan, a town of 2,000 roughly 100 kilometres southeast of Calgary. “Once I did all the training, even though I was already in the fire department, you just looked at things that much differently again because it’s things that you might not even have thought of.
“It’s tough in years like this, but try to keep green, because green, short grass doesn’t burn as well,” he said. “If it does, it doesn’t burn as fast.”“A place that a lot of people overlook is under a deck,” he said. “If your deck is not sheathed in, that’s a great place for all that to collect.”“We are creatures of habit.
