N.L. government to table Pay Equity and Pay Transparency Act

Lt.-Gov Judy Foote reads the speech from the throne at the Colonial Building in St. John's Wednesday, Oct. 5. Joe Gibbons • The TelegramST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Sunlight beamed through the historic Colonial Building’s windows on Wednesday, Oct. 5, as Lt.-Gov. Judy Foote became the first woman to deliver the speech from the throne in that building.

She reiterated the government’s recent promise to enact pay equity legislation during this session, which would enshrine the concept of equal pay for work of equal value. What exactly it will entail is still unclear. SaltWire Network tried to ask Premier Andrew Furey for details afterward, but his communications director said he would not be doing an interview.“Pay equity is about supporting women and gender-diverse people who face inequality in the workplace,” Furey said.

Foote said the government will establish a cabinet committee on seniors to “revolutionize how we address seniors’ issues, from medical issues regarding the frail elderly to wraparound services to help seniors age in place with dignity.”
