A leading economist told parliamentarians on Wednesday that she lies awake at night thinking about how as food prices show no sign of plateauing, more and more Canadians will opt for hunger to keep a roof over their heads.

Armine Yalnizyan, a fellow at the Atkinson Foundation and a former senior economist at the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, addressed the House of Commons finance committee to share her thoughts on the current state of inflation. “Should we do nothing because doing something — doing anything — could be inflationary? That would simply be cruel and inhumane,” she said. “This is about survival for millions of Canadians. … You have plenty of room to act today, fiscally and morally, with immediate action.”
