'Fondly remembered': West Edmonton Mall euthanizes Kelpie the sea lion yeg
“California sea lions average between 15-20 years old in the wild, so Kelpie far outlived her natural life expectancy,” the mall’s statement said. “The extremely hard decision to humanely euthanize Kelpie was made by our veterinary team after a thorough examination and with her best interests in mind.”listing for California sea lions says the animals live an average of 25 to 30 years in human care.
At the time, the mall said it didn’t want to make a splash with throngs of people disturbing Kelpie and two other accompanying sea lions, Pablo and Clara. The mall spent US$150,000 to purchase the animals and CDN$60,000 to bring them to Edmonton, where the marine mammals took up residence in the shopping centre’s refurbished dolphin tank.Article content
