Following her dreams: Highland dancer from Greenhill, N.S. recounts Basel Tattoo in Switzerland

to travel to Basel, Switzerland, to participate in the Basel Tattoo, an annual show in which dancers and musicians from across the globe come to perform. The Tattoo took place from July 14 – 22.“I’ve travelled nationally for competitions,” said Murray. “Our provincial championships, national championships, world championships.”

“We had a week of rehearsals,” said Murray. “We were going in, and we didn’t know any of the dances we would be performing throughout our show run. So, we had a week to choreograph, perfect and perform the dances we were learning.Murray said they spent around 16 hours in the studio every day leading up to the shows, perfecting their craft. This was made all the easier with the help of their Nova Scotian co-directors, Stephanie Grant and Stephanie Turnbull.

Brent McCombsMurray said over 8,000 people would be in attendance each night. When it was broadcasted to television, Murray believed over a million tuned in to watch. “There was a group from New Zealand, a group from Switzerland, of course. Ukraine, which was pretty cool. Mexico was there.”

This love of performance has led her down many avenues. On top of being a renowned dancer, she is also an accomplished vocalist and has performed at the Neptune Theatre in Halifax.
