Flooding from the slow-moving ex-tropical cyclone Ellie wreaks havoc across Western Australia’s Kimberley region
The Australian Defence Force has been called in evacuate residents from the Fitzroy River catchment area as flooding from the slow-moving ex-tropical cyclone Ellie wreaks havoc across Western Australia’s Kimberley region.
“A lot of the river communities have water through their houses, houses built to be above the 100-year flood mark have water in them but not as bad.“The state of emergency has meant civilian aircraft have been able to be used so all I can hear all day are helicopters bringing people in who are being rescued off balconies of their hotels or houses, or taking food out as no planes have been able to take off out of Broome as there is storm impacting there as well.
“Fitzroy Crossing is now completely isolated and the only way to get in or out of it is by helicopter or by specialised fixed-wing aircraft,” he said. Myers said some Fitzroy Crossing residents were angry with how long it took the government to arrange support, but for the most part they were in good spirits and the community was banding together.
The Fitzroy Crossing Bridge has been seriously damaged, cutting off a major supply route between WA and the Northern Territory. A warning is also in place for communities downstream including Noonkanbah, where the river is expected to peak at 14 metres on Thursday, and Willare, which is expected to peak at 8 metres.DFES commissioner Darren Klemm said there had been 39 requests for assistance since Monday afternoon including people stranded by flood water and property damage.
