Flood warnings were issued, thousands of homes lost power and a man was missing as heavy rain lashed southeast Australia on Thursday.

Rivers across New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania were rising dangerously with catchments soaked by months of above-average rainfall.

Police on Tuesday found the body of a 46-year-old man in his submerged car in floodwater near the city of Bathurst, west of Sydney.In Victoria, emergency crews rescued at least five people driving through floodwaters in rural areas after heavy overnight rain, officials said.“It’s very dangerous for you, and it’s also very dangerous for the person who has to come to rescue you,” he told reporters.

The SES has rescued 18 people including those driving through floodwaters in rural areas. It has received more than 1000 calls for help in the past 48 hours, mainly in Swan Hill, Echuca and Seymour. In the northern Tasmanian town of Railton, 90 homes were threatened by floodwaters after overnight rain.

Emergency crews rescued several people from a property at Liffey, southwest of Launceston, on Thursday.
