Flames take a step back, show a lack of emotion in loss to Wings

Head coach Darryl Sutter had just referred to a lack of emotion in the defeat to the Red Wings. Tanev agreed. Mikael Backlund reiterated the point a few minutes later.

This was a game that should have been easy to get up for, but despite goals from Elias Lindholm and Dillon Dube that had the score tied midway through the second period, the Flames had no response when the Red Wings made their second-half push.“Yeah, that’s the leadership of the group,” Sutter said when he was asked about whose responsibility it was for the players to have more emotion.

That’s exactly the sort of thing the Flames could use right now. There have been points this season where it’s felt like they were close to being a team that could finally start clicking and go on a run, but it just hasn’t happened. That it came just four minutes into the third period only made it worse. It squashed any hope of a comeback. Fans were already leaving their seats and heading for the exits.

Jerrard spent the past five seasons coaching at the University of Omaha, but had previously been as assistant with the Flames from 2016-18. He was the only Black assistant coach in NHL during that time, and previously worked with both the Dallas Stars and Colorado Avalanche.
