It is true that Markstrom has not been as solid this season as he was in 2021-22, when he earned a Vezina Trophy nomination. This year, his goals-against average has gone up to 2.97, his save percentage is hovering at .889 and he’s got an 8-6-2 record. “He has high expectations of himself, at the end of the day that’s the bottom line,” said Flames head coach Darryl Sutter. “That’s a good thing. It’s better to have high expectations than to be a 50-50 guy.”Article content
They couldn’t manage that and while you could argue that the goal was technically the difference between the Flames losing instead of the game going to overtime, it’s equally true that they had a lot of chances of their own and could only find the back of the net once. “I don’t really know where these questions are coming from. We’re a team in here and we always have each other’s backs. If one guy or two guys or three guys don’t play their best, it’s a new day, new opportunities. As I said, in my opinion he’s a top-two or two-three goalie in the league and he’s an unbelievable guy and unbelievable player.”
