Spiritualized, who have released eight albums, beginning with 1992’s Lazer Guided Melodies, appears at the Commodore Ballroom on April 2

1. Space-rock royalty. Formed in 1990, Spiritualized has released eight albums, beginning with 1992’s Lazer Guided Melodies. Each record has burnished the Spiritualized brand to the point where the group is often called “legendary.” Singer/songwriter/frontman Jason Pierce, who cut his space-rock teeth in the trio Spacemen 3, is the only constant in Spiritualized as he changes the lineup from album to album, which draw on influences such as blues, psychedelia, and gospel.

2. Ladies and Gentlemen … The band has released eight studio albums, including Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space. NME magazine named the 1997 record as its Album of the Year, over Radiohead’s OK Computer and The Verve’s Urban Hymns. 3. And Nothing Hurt. The band’s eighth album followed eight years after the release of 2012’s Sweet Heart Sweet Light. According to Pitchfork, each song “is a meticulously realized testament to Pierce’s endless pursuit of perfection.”

4. “Transcendent wig-out.” As of this writing, Spiritualized had just begun its North American tour in support of And Nothing Hurt, so reviews have yet to appear. It’s unknown whether the lineup will include the string and horn sections and gospel choir of the band’s fall UK shows, but there will be other pleasures.

5. Mortality. In recent years, Pierce has survived near-fatal bouts of liver disease and double pneumonia. He has also hinted that this album and tour may be Spiritualized’s last.
