After a down year last season, the door is open for some BlueJays players to make big strides in 2019 (jonahkeri)
A tie for their worst record in 14 years; their worst runs scored and runs allowed totals in 23 years. Finding silver linings a year after the colossal letdown of the 2018 Blue Jays season isn’t easy.
If there is an upside to an 89-loss snoozer of a season , it’s this: For many players, there’s gigantic room for improvement. Here are five Jays I like to make notable strides in 2019, including several coming off disappointing 2018 campaigns. It took seven starts before the Jays finally tossed Stroman onto the disabled list with a shoulder injury. But the results suggest he might’ve been fighting that problem from day one last season, given his numbers right before landing on the DL in early May: 37 ⅓ innings, 46 hits, 18 walks, five home runs, and a 7.71 ERA.
His numbers upon his late-June return looked a lot more like vintage Stroman: 59 ⅓ innings, 57 hits, 16 walks, just three home runs allowed, and a 3.34 ERA. Stroman showed up to camp this spring with his arm fully healthy. He makes up for below-average strikeout rates by being the most prolific groundball-generating starting pitcher in the game, a skillset that’s remained both unchanged and immensely valuable in limiting big innings. By fielding-independent pitching he was the same guy in 2018 that we saw in 2017, just with an ERA two and a half runs higher.
