Police said the man had enjoyed a 'successful morning of fishing' in Tasmania before realising his boat had drifted from shore, with a witness describing how he 'disappeared' under the water trying to retrieve it.

The 50-year-old Sheffield man was at Boundary Bay on the western side of the man-made Great Lake when the incident occurred on Thursday. Senior Sergeant John Parker from Tasmania Police said the man, whose name has not been released, had enjoyed a "successful morning fishing and had been preparing himself for lunch"."The man has taken his clothes off, swum out to the boat some distance out, has reached the boat, and has been unable to get in … he then disappeared under the water.

"It's a beautiful day for fishing here, the man no doubt would have been having a great time.
