So, the department set a deadline for Canadian fixed gear fisheries to begin using breakaway lead lines that would allow anything weighing 1,700 pounds or more to break free. “When that snaps, the line actually snaps back onto the boat and creates a safety concern for the captains and deckhands that it may fly back and hit.”
To prevent that, the goal is to have only the lead line break without actually losing what’s on the other end, she said.
