“Since Saturday, asylum seekers who have been arriving in Quebec are being redirected towards other provinces, with a few exceptions,” Quebec Immigration Minister Christine Fréchette said Tuesday.Article content The inciting incident for the influx is generally credited as U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to pull the visas of more than 60,000 nationals from seven Muslim-majority countries. In response, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued an unofficial invitation to the affected nationals to come to Canada.Article content

One loophole, however, is to illegally cross the Canadian border and then make an asylum claim in the country’s interior. Roxham Road — a section of the Quebec-New York border where the border could be illegally crossed simply by walking over a ditch — soon became the primary focal point of the crossings.Article content
