Conservatives have threatened to defund the Canadian public broadcaster before, but never like this.
told The Globe and Mail
Poilievre’s overtures — including the slogan “Defund the CBC” — are very similar to the promises once made by Poilievre’s predecessor Erin O’Toole. But O’Toole notably took an almost 180-degree turn when it came time to pitch the plan in a federal campaign.in early 2020 when he was still a candidate for the party leadership.
Throughout all nine years of the Conservative government of Stephen Harper, the only real action taken against the public broadcaster was an incremental series of budget cuts that saw its federal funding fall by about 14 per cent.on the CBC budget than two of his Liberal predecessors. On a year-by-year basis, both Paul Martin and Jean Chrétien left CBC finances in a tighter state at the end of their tenure.
