U.S. President Joe Biden\u0027s pledge to \u0027Buy American\u0027 on infrastructure projects would cut out billions in Canadian exports.
The Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters were one of the first to sound the alarm that many of these trade flows could be badly damaged by “Buy American.” “A strong response is needed to push back and protect Canadian access to the US procurement market,” wrote the group in a statement posted to Twitter.
As recently as the 1990s, free trade with Canada was openly championed by both major U.S. political parties. But in recent years, both Republican and Democratic politicians have increasingly supported imposing latticework of subsidies and tariffs along their northern border.
