The orange shirt movement originates from Phyllis Webstad, a Shuswap woman whose new orange shirt and clothes, were taken away from her at residential school on her first day there. She and other Indigenous children who went through this were made to feel like they did not matter. “What Derek has provided us in this project is education on the legacy of the residential schools, and just to be much more aware of some of the challenges that Derek has experienced personally and the Indigenous peoples," said Rob Newcombe, Stanfield’s vice-president of sales and marketing.

“To have a colonial company – and they were founded before the Dominion of Canada – to sit there and say to this Mi’kmaw guy, you know, ‘this is something that we believe in’ and ‘we want you to have a seat at this table where we are deciding all this stuff and have you guide that project’ that, to me, has always been the most incredible part about this project.”

Before, Mi’kmaq were not given room to be part of developing the textile industry in Nova Scotia. To him, people co-exist by respecting and treating one another as equals, including in business. National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is commemorated often by wearing orange shirts. - Contributed
