Flights at 2.50am, paying up to $20,000 return and crowded planes: such is life if you want to get to Europe in the next month and haven’t yet booked.
Forget booking a flight to Europe over the next month if you can, travel agents say, because the Rugby World Cup, an autumn holiday boom and Australia’s capacity shortfall are combining to drive prices even higher.
Managing director of Mosman Travel Sharyn Kitchener on Wednesday put down $18,000 for a corporate client needing to fly business-class from Sydney to Rome return at short notice. “I had no choice but to put him on the Emirates 2.50am out of Brisbane on an older 777 aircraft. He didn’t want the 777, but this is the sort of stuff you have to end up taking if you’re booking last minute.
