A petrol station has exploded into flames after gas cylinders caught alight as crews worked to save neighbouring homes in Sydney's west.

"It was an extremely intense fire ... the flames were leaping high and starting to impinge on adjoining properties." A specialised hazard materials team monitored the scene on Sackville Street and Hamilton Road after the fire was extinguished to ensure the damaged facility posed no risk to the community.
