The Department of Health (DOH) reported a 38% increase in firecracker-related injuries this New Year's season compared to last year. A total of 843 injuries were recorded from December 22, 2024, to January 6, 2025. Kwitis, 5-star, and boga are the leading causes of these injuries, with males accounting for the majority of cases. The DOH urges parents to prevent children from handling firecrackers due to the serious risks involved, including blindness, amputation, and even death.

MONITORING by the Department of Health indicate that a total of 843 firecracker-related injuries have been reported from December 22,2024 up to 6 a.m. of January 6.

This number, the department said, is higher by 38 percent compared to the total of 610 cases reported in 2024.Kwitis, is the leading cause of the recorded firecracker injuries, followed by 5-star, and boga.Most of the injured are male at 696. The DOH reminded the parents not to allow their children to handle firecrackers or fireworks for they are dangerous objects that can even blindness, amputation or even death.Claudeth Mocon-Ciriaco is a grant recipient and fellow of 2017 media fellowship program by Probe Media Foundation Inc.
