Crews could only attack flames from the exterior because the fire was so large, fire chief says.

Video captured by Pete van Roosendaal showed the 7,000-square-foot home engulfed in fire as first responders battled the blaze at 10 p.m.

About 30 firefighters from the North Cowichan, Duncan and Cowichan fire departments responded to the fire, which was in an area without hydrants. Genoa Bay is in the Cowichan Valley about 12 kilometres east of Duncan at the south end of Sansum Narrows.North Cowichan Fire Chief Martin Drakely told CHEK News that crew could only attack the flames from the exterior because the fire was so large.
