Fire chief welcomes expanded cancer coverage for firefighters

THUNDER BAY — City Fire Chief Greg Hankkio is welcoming the Ontario government's decision to add thyroid and pancreatic cancer to the list of presumptive occupation-related cancers.

The fire chief said there have been improvements in personal protective equipment, changes in standard operating procedures, and a greater focus on firefighter health and safety. Hankkio said firefighter safety related specifically to cancer is "front and centre in our minds all the time."
