Cooking Culinary Adventure: inspired by Halifax's Seaport Market | SaltWire #cooking #cookingshortsAn analysis of satellite images has shown that blowdowns from post-tropical storm Fiona had a severe impact on 13 per cent of P.E.I.’s forests, whose combined area added up to more than 34,000 hectares of land.

“Our estimate is about 13 per cent of P.E.I.’s forests were affected – doesn’t mean that every stick of wood in that area is blown down. But those are the most heavily affected areas,” MacQuarrie told SaltWire.Broken down by region, eastern P.E.I. saw 18 per cent of its forests affected while 12 per cent of central P.E.I. forests were affected. Western P.E.I., which sustained the least amount of high winds, saw five per cent of its forests affected.

SaltWire has asked the Department of Environment what the minister based his earlier figure on. An email from the department referred SaltWire to a press release from June that stated “localized windfall” from Fiona was “up to 40 per cent.” MacQuarrie said provincial crews are applying FireSmart, or international fire prevention, standards to these areas.
