Government secures Greens’ support for housing billThe government has struck a deal with the Greens on its housing bill, earning the minor party’s support. Greens leader Adam Bandt says the minor party has managed to secure a guaranteed $500 million a year to be spent on housing. “Today, the Greens have secured an additional $1 billion that will be spent this year directly on public and community housing,” he said during a media conference on Monday. Mr Bandt said the Greens have prepared subject to the Senate to pass Labor’s housing bill this week.

Greens putting pressure and fighting back ‘against the Labor Party’Greens MP and Housing Spokesman Max Chandler-Mather says renters have “found their voice” because of Greens putting pressure and fighting back against the Labor Party. “There is $3 billion going out the door for public and community housing,” Mr Chandler-Mather said during a media conference on Monday. “Renters have found their voice as a result of Greens pressure and fighting back against the Labor Party and a government that wanted to ignore the one-third of this country who rents.” Mr Chandler-Mather said the government was 'refusing to spend a single extra dollar” on public and community housing. “Today, the Greens have secured an extra billion dollars for public and community housing in addition to the $2 billion we’ve secured by the social housing accelerator,” he said. “That means there will be thousands of people in this country, thousands of families, single mums, pensioners, people waiting decades for a public and community home, who will get to move into that home with a roof over their heads because the Greens stood up and fought. “That $3 billion would mean roofs over the heads for thousands of families waiting for a public or community home.”

Government strikes deal with the Greens on Labor’s Housing Australia Future FundPrime Minister Anthony Albanese and the Greens have come to a deal on Labor’s Housing Australia Future Fund, removing a double dissolution trigger and meaning that the legislation will now pass the Senate. The Greens managed to secure an additional $1 billion that will be spent this year directly on public and community housing. The Greens had held out on giving their support to Labor’s housing bill until their demands were met, which led to a months-long stalemate within parliament. The minor party was pushing the Albanese government to increase the annual housing spending to $2.5 billion while demanding stronger rental restrictions. Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says the Greens will, however, continue to fight the Albanese government on trying to get a rent freeze implemented.
