On a country estate in late 19th-century France, cook Eugenie works with her employer, the famed gourmet Dodin , to prepare menus that exemplify their philosophy of making the most of simple ingredients. Eugenie, realising that she is getting on in years, begins teaching Pauline , a girl with a gifted palate.
The visual authenticity on display here is the highlight of The Taste Of Things, which belongs to the genre of films about competent people going about their daily tasks. The two persons seen through the lens of Chilean documentary-maker Maite Alberdi Soto are Augusto Gongora and Paulina Urrutia, who have been together for more than 20 years. He is a former journalist and she is an actress and former minister of culture and the arts.
The Guardian newspaper says the film makes it clear that the two were “madly in love from the start” and calls the work “humane and profoundly empathic”.
