Car Help Canada spokesperson advises buyers to order instead of shopping the lot

Chad Livingston knows the days are over when the huge lot at Riverview Ford was crammed with 400 new, shiny vehicles.

“The difficulties are still a strain from COVID,” Livingston told Brunswick News. “There’s a supply chain issue. Even though we have stock right now, we don’t really have stock in anything but trucks. So affordable SUV, cars, there’s nothing available. I don’t have an Escape in stock, I don’t have a Bronco Sport, I don’t have Explorers. They’re coming, but the minute they land, they sell instantly.

“Every good and service seems to have inflated since COVID, groceries, gas, cars, houses, everything is up," said Livingston."And that seems to have slowed the buying process for expensive vehicles such as higher end trucks, large SUVs, anything that’s harder on gas.” TD Economics automotive outlook earlier this year predicted that inventory improvements would help Canadian sales track higher in 2023 to 1.6 million vehicles, but the author, Andrew Foran, warned sales would likely remain below pre-pandemic levels “as economic headwinds weigh on demand.”

Prymak said supply chain issues, the war in Ukraine, a port strike earlier this year in British Columbia and the latest job action by tens of thousands of autoworkers in the United States are all contributing to the slowdown. Exacerbating the problem in Canada, automakers have prioritized inventory for American customers because it’s a bigger, more lucrative market.
