The federal government is endorsing heat pumps as a way to keep Canadian homes warm in the winter and cool in the summer, drawing the ire of the Conservatives. Last November, the Liberals announced a new $250-million grant, which is expected to open to applications in the coming months and will provide eligible homeowners with up to $5,000 to help fund the installation of a heat pump.

“Heat pumps have the ability to reduce pollution in our communities and bring the cost of heat down for homeowners,” said Immigration Minister Sean Fraser in the House of Commons shortly after announcing the Oil to Heat Pump Affordability program in his home province of Nova Scotia.
