Labor frontbencher Anne Aly has encouraged advocates of the Palestinian cause to remain focused on achieving constructive outcomes amidst the war in Gaza, after becoming the target of a heated attack by activists over the weekend.

Labor MP Anne Aly has denounced aggressive displays of activism after her recent confrontation with pro-Palestine activists, urging people to"elevate each other’s voices" despite their disappointment in the government.

Addressing the incident with the media on Friday, Dr Aly conceded while she fully supports the right to peaceful protest in the robust democracy of Australia, she found her confrontation with the pro-Palestine activists “frankly, quite aggressive”. “I fully understand people’s passion, their anger, and their distress. I think anger and distress are valid in this case when you look at what is happening in Gaza,” she told ABC RN Breakfast.

But the Labor MP said aggressive demonstrations were proving to be detrimental to pro-Palestinian advocacy, agreeing to host Patricia Karvelas when asked if they were having a chilling effect on politicians and their ability to do their job. In the interview, Dr Aly was also asked about whether her Muslim faith and position as just one of two elected Muslim politicians in federal parliament led to increased public expectations to represent the Palestinian cause.

“In terms of educating myself, I was born in the region, I lived in Egypt in the 1980s and was campaigning for Palestine. I’ve visited Palestine, and as a professor of Counter Terrorism and International Security, have actually written book chapters and articles on the history of Gaza, and Palestine, and Israel. So I think I’m pretty educated on the subject.
