She believes the judge's decision supports suspicions shared by colleagues across various departments and agencies that the deferred resignation program was legally questionable. Another worker in the Pacific Northwest, despite the judge's decision, chose to accept the offer on Thursday, hoping to move overseas. Even if the financial benefits don't materialize, she is determined to leave, unwilling to comply with administration policies such as eliminating diversity initiatives. She fears the situation will worsen for those who remain.The administration has intensified pressure on employees to leave, warning of potential layoffs or furloughs if they don't participate. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM), at the center of Musk's efforts to downsize the government, sent a message stating that 'the majority of federal agencies are likely to be downsized through restructurings, realignments, and reductions in force.' Remaining employees, the message stated, will be expected to be 'loyal' and 'will be subject to enhanced standards of suitability and conduct.' Some employees could face reclassification to limit civil service protections. The OPM also warned that 'Employees who engage in unlawful behavior or other misconduct will be prioritized for appropriate investigation and discipline, including termination.' Democrats and union leaders have cautioned employees against accepting the deferred resignation program, citing its lack of congressional authorization and the risk of non-payment. Everett Kelley, president of the American Federation of Government Employees, called it 'a scam and not a buyout.' A Department of Education employee, also speaking anonymously, described the administration's approach as desperate, pointing out numerous red flags, including a clause waiving the right to sue if the government fails to fulfill its obligations.Trump placed Musk, the world's richest man, in charge of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a sweeping initiative aimed at reducing the size and scope of the federal government. The original email offering the deferred resignation program was titled 'Fork in the road,' echoing a similar message Musk sent Twitter employees two years ago after acquiring the social media platform. Trump administration officials held question-and-answer sessions with employees as the deadline approached. Rachel Oglesby, the chief of staff at the Department of Education, addressed concerns about the program's legitimacy, stating, 'it's exactly what it looks like. It's one of the many tools that he's using to try to achieve the campaign promise to bring reform to the civil service and changes to D.C.' The Associated Press obtained recordings of these meetings, one for Department of Education employees and another for Department of Agriculture employees.
