Indigenous and non-Indigenous deaths in custody will be reported in real time from today as part of a federal government attempt to address the number of people dying behind bars.

"We know the harm that's caused by incarceration. It can be deaths in custody but often incarceration will lead to further incarceration. That is the reality. It doesn't make communities safer necessarily and it's simply not working.
