Fatima Payman said she believes she upheld Labor's values when she crossed the floor against her party during the week.
Senator Fatima Payman says she has no plans to leave the Labor party, despite breaking ranks and crossing the floor during a vote on Palestinian statehood. Payman became the first Labor senator to cross the floor in almost two decades, voting for a Greens motion on the recognition of a Palestinian state on Tuesday. Under internal rules, Labor MPs cannot cross the floor and vote against the party's policy positions.
Despite facing possible expulsion, Payman clarified she had no desire to leave the Labor party when asked if she would quit the caucus. "No, I do not have any intention," she told Insiders on Sunday morning. She said you could not have the most diverse parliament without embracing a "diversity of views". Senator Payman said she believed in a two-state solution and that she would cross the floor again if there was another motion on the issue.
