Dresden Sports Hall of Fame member Jay Brodie is being remembered for his love of family, farming and sports after dying of cancer Monday.
He is survived by his wife, Lynn, daughters Justine and Laura, son TJ and seven grandchildren.“His grandkids loved spending time with him, getting a push on the swings, soaking in the hot tub, singing country music, getting tractor rides or watching hockey games,” his obituary reads.
In Dresden, a Southwestern Ontario town between London and Windsor, Brodie was inducted into the local sports hall of fame in April. He also entered the nearby Chatham Sports Hall of Fame in 2018 as a member of the 1977-78 Chatham Thames Valley Brick major midget AA team that won an Ontario Minor Hockey Association championship.
Visitation is Friday at Alexander and Houle Funeral Home at 245 Wellington St. W. in Chatham from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A celebration of life will be held later. His son TJ played four OHL seasons with Saginaw and Barrie before carving out a stellar, ongoing NHL career as a stalwart defenceman. TJ Brodie has played 830 NHL games with Calgary and Toronto. Now 33, he’s entering the final season of a four-year, US $20-million deal with the Maple Leafs.
