Ottawa-Helping farmers cope with the cost of climate protection measures and bolstering the country’s infrastructure are key themes in the Canadian Federation of Agriculture’s requests for the next federal budget, expected this fall.
The government should also leverage agriculture’s full breadth of potential environmental benefits by establishing carbon pricing exemptions for necessary climate change mitigation activities, implementing an accessible, broad suite of agricultural offset protocols and creating additional ecological goods and services programming.
The budget must also increase provide strategic investments to support agriculture’s expanded role as not only a producer of quality agrifood products that feed Canadians and the global marketplace, but also a provider of many public goods and services, CFA said.
