While François Legault\u0027s election\u002Dnight words were welcome, please forgive my apprehensions.
. You cannot, as premier, pass discriminatory legislation and then claim to be the premier for all Quebecers.
We cannot underestimate the damage these laws do to anglophone and many allophone communities in our province. After returning from a recent work trip to France, I was astonished to see an ad on a subway in Paris that read, “Et les Français parlent anglais.” It was a sharp contrast to declarations here of “Au Quebec on parle français.” I recognize the critical difference that France is a French country, whereas Quebec is trying extraordinarily hard to hold onto the French language while being a part of Canada. However, it was nice to see English being viewed as a plus, not a threat.
