The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has issued a report emphasizing the critical need for sustainable nitrogen management in agriculture to address soil degradation, nutrient depletion, and the global climate crisis. The report highlights the challenges posed by nitrogen pollution, particularly in regions with intensive fertilizer use, while also acknowledging the detrimental effects of nitrogen deficiency in other areas. FAO urges governments, the fertilizer industry, and farmers to adopt measures that minimize environmental impacts and promote efficient nitrogen utilization.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations ( FAO ) is advocating for the responsible use of nitrogen to mitigate soil degradation , nutrient depletion, and the impacts of global warming. In a recent report released in Rome, FAO underscored the urgency of sustainable nitrogen management within agrifood systems. The report provided a comprehensive analysis of nitrogen utilization and its associated challenges.

FAO highlighted that nitrogen pollution is most acute in North America, Western Europe, and certain Asian nations, where decades of excessive and improper fertilizer application have led to detrimental environmental consequences. Conversely, in some low- and middle-income countries, restricted access to fertilizers can result in nitrogen deficiency, further exacerbating soil nutrient depletion and degradation. While acknowledging recent advancements in nitrogen use efficiency, FAO emphasized the need for sustained efforts. The report offers a detailed set of recommendations aimed at further optimizing nitrogen utilization, thereby minimizing pollution while simultaneously promoting environmental and human well-being. FAO urged the fertilizer industry to expedite actions to curtail greenhouse gas emissions during the production of mineral nitrogen fertilizers and implement measures to minimize wasteful losses throughout storage, transportation, and land application. The organization also called upon national governments to promote the widespread adoption of biological nitrogen fixation techniques in locally suitable crop rotations, incorporating leguminous crops such as soybeans or alfalfa. FAO further recommended that governments establish guidelines to assist livestock farmers in implementing best manure management practices, focusing on minimizing nitrogen loss to the environment and maximizing its efficient utilization within productive agricultural systems. Policies within agrifood systems should prioritize the use of organic nitrogen fertilizers to enhance sustainability. Moreover, they should encourage spatial planning initiatives that involve livestock redistribution, reducing livestock density in areas with high geographical concentration, and fostering circular bioeconomy approaches.FAO stressed the importance of integrating sustainable nitrogen management into nationally appropriate mitigation actions and nationally determined contributions, including setting targets to reduce nitrous oxide emissions from agrifood systems. This measure is crucial for keeping the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius within reach

Laurel stated that imported rice (five percent broken) should not exceed P60 per kilo and 25 percent broken rice should not exceed P50. To address the issue, the DA will hold a consultative meeting with rice retailers and importers to establish a maximum suggested retail price for rice by the end of January. The meeting aims to provide a platform for stakeholders to discuss and address the pricing issue.
