The Caddy collection contains many lovely examples of paintings and works on paper by distinguished Australian artists at tempting estimates.

A former PwC partner and his wife have left their Toorak apartment to settle permanently in England, regretfully leaving behind a large collection of Australian art.

Detail from Frances “Frankie” Derham MBE’s Seated Man, which is estimated to fetch between $800 and $1200 in Gibsons’ online auction. Percy Watson’s Dispersed Forms, 1952, in oil on board, is estimated to fetch between $500 and $800 in Gibsons’ online auction.Artist George Bell was a champion of modern art in Australia – no mean feat in the conservative Menzies era. Bell’s. Dargie won the Archibald Prize so many times and with such academic paintings that artist John Olsen led a noisy protest against the judges.

Betty Olsen was an artist who studied under George Bell and Max Meldrum. Like many artists, Olsen collected artworks by her peers.Kit Olsen was a master at Melbourne Grammar School and the couple later lived in Penang and Afghanistan, Paris and Sierra Leone when Kit was working for UNESCO.Kit and Betty Olsen died having not had children, and in 2001 David Caddy inherited the artworks they had collected during their marriage.

“Presumably/hopefully she made some sales, but there were many paintings still stored in their house when she died in 1991.”David Caddy left Australia at age six. “My father was sent to build two more rocket ranges in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, and somehow he never returned home,” he said.William Dobell’s sketchbook sold very well in Davidson Auctions’ Provenance: Family of the Artist sale in Sydney on Sunday 14 April, 2024.
