The Kondinin community celebrates the promised return of its school bus service, but at least one other community in the Midwest is fighting to keep theirs going next year.
However, Yuna Primary School is fighting to keep one of its two bus routes, which School Bus Services plans to cease in 2025.The Isolated Children's Parent's Association says this is happening across the state and is calling for more community consultation before regional routes are removed. For 10 years, the rural town of Kondinin in Western Australia's Wheatbelt has been fighting for a dedicated primary school bus to be reinstated.
School board member Beverley Stanes said there had been a fall in student numbers at Kondinin Primary School after the withdrawal of its service. Ms Stanes said while the decision was welcome, the community was on a "knife-edge" due to previous disappointment. Ms Mann said the local community wanted to realign the two bus routes, so the south-east bus picked up another family of three children in 2025, bringing the total up to four and reducing the travel time for that family."I'm not asking for a bus for my child, that's ridiculous. No-one expects that, and I certainly don't," Ms Mann said.Ms Mann said there were prospective students in coming years who would require the service.
