Many politicians responded in “poor taste” to the death of Queen Elizabeth II, says Sky News Digital Editor Jack Houghton.
Greens Senator Mehreen Faruqi wrote on social media that she couldn’t mourn the leader of a “racist empire” built on “stolen lives, land and wealth of colonised peoples”. “To say it was in poor taste is an understatement, and predictably it triggered heated response in kind,” Mr Houghton said. One Nation leader Pauline Hanson hit back at Senator Faruqi’s comments, saying she should leave Australia if she thought the country was racist.
“Now allegedly, the Australian Human Rights Commission is investigating Hanson, which raises all sorts of questions about how robust speech can be in Australia,” Mr Houghton said.
