The Elks had all of 21 passing yards to show for the first three quarters, relying on 228 rushing yards. Marching back downfield looking to add to their lead as the quarter wound down following a 37-yard field goal that made the score 7-3, Ford scampered for a 21-yard gain across midfield on a broken play.
Edmonton got a scare when Ford went down after taking a hit to the ribs by Stampeders linebacker Cameron Judge, which left the Elks quarterback gasping for breath before being helped to the sidelines with 1:28 left in the half. After Calgary put another field goal on the board, a 29-yard boot by Paredes to go ahead 23-7, the Elks caught a break in the form of a pass-interference call against Taylor, setting them up in the red zone.
Ford then found a wide-open Eugene Lewis for a 33-yard gain that eclipsed all 25 passing yards the Elks managed up to that point. And sent the next snap 32 yards downfield to Mitchell in the end zone.Ford marched back downfield looking for a third straight major, drawing a roughing-the-passer against Stampeders linebacker Micah Awe. It led to a 40-yard field goal by Faithfull to climb back within one point of Calgary’s lead.
