Previously, we shared how the Communications Ministry and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission held a meeting with Meta and TikTok today. Well, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has announced the result of the meeting, which has resulted in both companies pledging commitment to address online safety and monitoring criminal-related content on their platforms.

Taking to his official X account, Fahmi said that both Meta and TikTok have given their commitment to the government regarding online safety for children under 13. While he didn’t elaborate on this, the Communications Minister had previously stressed that children under the age of 13 shouldn’t and can’t have accounts on social media.

However, social media platforms do not provide strict mechanisms to prevent this. He further asserted that if the platforms refuse to cooperate, the Ministry will take several actions against the platform provider and colluding parties. Besides that, Fahmi also revealed that Meta and TikTok have pledged commitment to address criminal-related content such as online gambling, scams, fake news and content related to race, religion and royalty . He added that both companies were informed about the government’s plans to improve the laws and regulations on social media platform operations in Malaysia.
