UNDERSEA cables are used to transport electricity, oil and gas, and information between continents, archipelagos and islands. They extend for thousands of kilometers to enable critical infrastructures like power grids and internet services to connect disparate territories.

On Christmas Eve, the 170-kilometer Estlink-2 undersea power and data cable between Finland and Estonia was severed by a cargo ship called Eagle S. This resulted in a power outage, disrupting internet services and electricity supply in Finland. Finnish commandos boarded and detained the Eagle S to conduct an investigation. It is accused of Russia's efforts to hurt the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's critical infrastructure to weaken its support of Ukraine.

Subsea communication and data cables were first used commercially in 1858, with the first trans-Atlantic telegraph connecting London to North America. It transmitted 143 words in about 10 hours. Today, the cables use fiber optic technology — as thick as garden hoses — to transport data at lightning speed. As the backbone of our modern information system, undersea cables carry 99 percent of international communications traffic, from voice calls and cellular messages to internet data.
