There are fresh warnings Australia is facing a skills shortage in the aviation industry. Thousands of workers – from baggage handlers to engineers – were sacked during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Transport Workers Union is calling for an independent aviation body to be established to advocate for workers' rights, but it faces opposition.
"Every day is different … there's only six Wedgetails in Australia and only a few more across the world," Mr Wooden said. From pilots to baggage handlers, maintenance, repairs and technicians – the aviation sector is contending with a worker shortage. The aviation workforce is aging at 1.4 times the national rate, with the average worker aged 45 years and older, according to government figures.
But they said the Albanese government had already acted to stop the underpayment of workers through the use of labour hire.
