William McDonald found out there can be some reward for doing right after getting caught up in something very wrong.
All of the convictions were serious, but none had mandatory minimum penalties, making the case eligible for a conditional sentence. The deciding factor that kept McDonald out of jail was more than five years of complying with strict bail conditions without any breaches or charges.
Defence lawyer Ron Ellis’s suggestion of a suspended sentence wasn’t appropriate, Gorman said, given the seriousness of the crime and substantial injuries suffered by Leadston and McDonald – but a conditional sentence was. But McDonald said during his testimony that he thought all the sex was consensual and never intended to hurt the woman. A second attempt to have sex stopped, he said, when he saw blood and “the mood was killed.”
McDonald ran, hid in some bushes until public transit started up and then headed home. Instead of calling the police, he contacted the sex workers through a public computer at the library to arrange with Leadston a time to meet later that day.Article content The car blew up and both men were badly burned. Leadston, who was brought to court to testify from jail, said he had no memory of what happened.
