From almost the moment the NHL’s ban on players using rainbow-coloured hockey Pride tape on their sticks was confirmed, there’s been chatter players would defy the ban.Travis Dermott, who skated for the Vancouver Canucks the past two season but who is with the Arizona Coyotes this season, was spotted with Pride tape on the shaft of his hockey stick during his team’s game on Saturday, a 2-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks.

In a memo sent to teams ahead of the season, the NHL reiterated on-ice player uniforms and gear for warm-up and official team practices cannot be altered to reflect theme nights, including Pride, Hockey Fights Cancer or military appreciation celebrations.Dermott wrapped some rainbow tape at the top end of his stick and wrapped some black tape partway down, but left some rainbow colours visible in the stretch of his stick below where his right hand holds the stick.
