The second-largest Iranian diaspora in the world is in the Greater Toronto Area. The community is feeling the impacts of the uprising and the harsh crackdowns, made worse by the uncertainty of communications blackouts.

Sara Shariati worries about friends in Iran she has heard have been arrested. She can’t get ahold of them and feels guilty that she is safe to continue her studies at the University of Toronto but her friends are not.

Shariati is proud of the stand many in the country are taking, but she also worries about the safety of her friends and family in Iran and feels guilty about her own relative safety in Canada.Iranian student constantly worries about loved ones at homeSara Shariati, a graduate student at the University of Toronto, says communicating with friends and family has been difficult since the protests began.

Members of the Iranian community gather in Toronto on Sept. 20 to protest after the death of Mahsa Amini. The 22-year-old woman died after being detained by Iran's morality police, reportedly for wearing her headscarf incorrectly."When I go to Iran, I will probably be arrested at the airport. And I know that. And my family knows that. But I keep thinking in my head, what have I done to deserve this?" she said.

"When I called and I don't know what happened to my family or to my friends, I am really frustrated. I am worried. I cry," she said. "It's on everybody's minds. Nobody wants to go out and party. Nobody wants to go to, you know, go to a concert. A lot of events have been cancelled because people are just… it's on their minds," Fayaz said.
